Resveratrol

Resveratrol's function for the plants it comes from is mainly to protect the fruit against fungus, but over the years research indicated that in humans it has a number of beneficial effects. Resveratrol is found in red wine and is thought to be the reason why this beverage is so beneficial for the heart. New studies add to the mounting evidence that resveratrol's abilities may reach beyond protecting the heart.
Resveratrol has been shown in clinical trials to help the body inhibit tumor initiation, promotion and progression. For centuries Asian medical doctors used the dried roots of Polygonum cuspidatum, which contain resveratrol, to treat a wide range of conditions. Resveratrol has also shown great benefit for heart disease. Resveratrol has demonstrated in numerous clinical trials the ability to reduce platelet aggregation and increase HDL-cholesterol. Resveratrol is a biological component found in red wine. The combination of resveratrol and other bioflavonoids, vitamins C and E, and the trace mineral selenium may be expected to have a highly synergistic effect in reducing pathological platelet aggregation, stimulating healthy blood flow via the dilation of arteries, and minimizing free radical damage to blood vessel linings. It has also been reported that resveratrol inhibits cellular events associated with tumor initiation, promotion and progression. In other words, Resveratrol is able to block all three mechanisms of cancer formation.

Scientists have long been puzzled by the 'French Paradox' - the surprising fact that the French eat more fatty foods than other populations in the western world, yet in general have a good level of cardiovascular health.

About a decade ago researchers, honed in on red wine as a possible explanation. New research shows that one particular ingredient in red wine - called Resveratrol, (which also occurs in peanuts and some herbs, including the herb, Polygonum Cuspidatum), may be the reason why their cardiovascular health is comparatively better than other European countries. In additon it now appears the resveratrol may play a key role in controlling cellular ageing process and could have far-reaching implications for health and longevity.
